Origin/meaning

Radolfzell was a village that belonged to the monastery in Reichenau, became a city in 1267, was sold to the Habsburg family in 1298 and became an imperial city in the 15th century. The oldest seal of Radolfzell shows a bishop (probably St. Radolf) and dates from the end of the 13th century.

In a later seal, dating shortly after 1300 the lion of Habsburg has been added. The present arms appear in 1514 and show the lion of Habsburg and the cross of the monastery of Reichenau instead of the bishop. The crown on the lion was granted by Archduke Ferdinand in 1526. The colours are known since 1513.
