Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Germany - Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) |
RATZEBURG
State : Schleswig-Holstein
District (Kreis) : Herzogtum Lauenburg
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on August 28, 1962.
The city developed around a castle built on a small island in the 12th century. The village was granted city rights in the 13th century. The oldest seal of the city is known since 1350 and shows a city wall with a gate. The present arms are derived from this seal. All later seals also showed the wall, but the illustrations were made according to the local style. As arms the wall appears in the 16th century.
