The chief shows the river Trent and the Trent bridge. The bridge has three arches for each of the former districts, and the bridge represents West Bridgford. The lower part shows the bears of the arms of the Basford family. On the green part is shown the Butter Cross, taken from the seal of Bingham RDC. The colours green and black symbolise agriculture and coal mining.

The crest shows some oak leaves, taken from the oak tree in the arms of Nottinghamshire County Council, situating the council in Nottinghamshire. The crest is canting, showing a cliff rising from rushes. The motto is taken from Cicero and means "The welfare of the people".
