SCHORTENS
State : Niedersachsen
District (Kreis) : Friesland
Additions : 1949 Östringen; 1972 Sillenstede
German | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were originally granted to the municipality of Östringen, and continued in 1949 by Schortens. The horse is a symbol for the formerly important horse breeding in the area. The horses bred in the area were very famous and even exported to France. In 1707 a very famous horse was bred in the Östringfelde Estate, and a silver medal was struck in honour of the horse.
The colours are opposite to the colours of the arms of the State of Niedersachsen, and were chosen to distinguish the two arms.
