SEEBODEN

State : Kärnten
District : Spittal an der Drau
Additions : 1973 Lieserhofen

Arms (crest) of Seeboden

Official blazon

Im blauen Schild eine goldene Meerjungfer, die in den Armen einen roten Schild hält, in dem eine mit einem roten Flügel belegte silberne Spitze erscheint, die von zwei silbernen Flügeln begleitet ist.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 30, 1958 and confirmed after the merger with Liederhofen in 1973.

The mermaid was chosen in 1958 as an appropriate symbol for the municipality, which is an important tourist area along the Millstätt Lake, the second largest lake in Carinthia. The symbol itself was probably based on a figurehead on a large tourist tourboat from the early 1950s.

The mermaid holds a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Ortenburg, the oldest known rulers of the area, who owned a large part of the current municipality in medieval times. They also built the Sommeregg castle in 1187, which they owned until 1418.
