Brasão de Setúbal

Official blazon=

Origin/meaning

The arms show a castle, fishing vessels and some fish. These are obvious symbols for a city which for many centuries has been dependent on fishing as its main economy. These symbols have been in use as city arms for at least 200 years.

The chief was added in 1922 and refers to the Order of Santiago, to which the city and nearby Palmela historically belonged for a long period of time. The cross was the symbol of the Order and the scallop is the symbol of St. James (Santiago).
