SIGMARINGEN

State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Sigmaringen
Additions : 1972 Oberschmeien, Unterschmeien; 1974 Gutenstein, Jungnau; 1975 Laiz

Wappen von Sigmaringen

Official blazon

In Rot ein stehender goldener Hirsch, oben rechts ein sechsstrahliger goldener Stern.

Origin/meaning=

The deer as the symbol for Sigmaringen appears already on the oldest known seal of the city, known since 1316. All later seals and arms show the deer, most often standing, but sometimes jumping.

The deer itself is most likely derived from the arms of the Counts of Peutengau-Hirschberg (Hirsch=deer), Lords of Sigmaringen until 1253.

The colours are generally gold in red, but until the 19th century also gold in blue appears.
