(1966) Gevierendeeld: 1 van azuuur met een leeuw van zilver, gewapend, getongd en gekroond van goud, beladen met drie dwarsbalken van keel, wat van de Sint Baafsabdij is; 2 van zilver met een kruis van keel, wat van de baronnie van Nevele is; 3 van keel met drie sleutels van goud, paalswijs geplaatst twee en één, de baard omhoog naar rechts gekeerd, wat van de Sint Pietersabdij is; 4 van goud met een leeuw van sabel, gewapend en getongd van keel, wat van de heerlijkheid van 's Graven Hazele is.
(1985) Gevierendeeld 1. in lazuur een leeuw gedwarsbalkt van zeven stukken van zilver en van keel, geklauwd, getongd en gekroond van goud 2. in sinopel een kruis van goud 3. in zilver een kruis van keel 4. in keel drie sleutels van goud.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 7, 1985.

The arms are based on the previous arms and show in the first quarter the barred lion of the St. Baafs Abbey in Gent, to which the village of Lathem belonged since before 1121. The golden cross in black is taken from the arms of the De Causemaecker family and represents the estate of 's Graven Hazele, which was from 1775-1785 a possession of this family. The red cross is taken from the arms of the Lords of Nevele, which owned large possessions in and near Deurle. The three keys are taken from the arms of the Sint Pieters Abbey in Gent, an Abbey with extended possessions in the whole larger region, including the present municipality.

The previous arms were granted on June 28, 1966 and showed similar elements as shown below.

In the old arms the lion, red cross and keys are identical. The black lion now represents 's Graven Hezele and shows the lion of Vlaanderen (for Graven, meaning here the Counts of Vlaanderen).
