Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 13, 1819 and again as a seal on May 9, 1914.

Sint-Pauwels was granted arms in 1814, but instead of confirming the arms, a seal was granted in 1914. The seal and the arms show St. Pauwels, the local patron saint, accompanied by the beet of the Waasland region. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.

The colours on the 1819 arms are the Dutch national colours, as in 1813 the mayor applied without indicating the colours. The arms were thus granted in the national colours. When the arms were confirmed after the Belgian independence, the colours were not changed.
