'''SOFIA (София)'''

Province: Sofia
===Origin/meaning===
The castle signifies city status, dating back to the pre-Roman Thracian city of Ulpia Serdicae ('City of the Serdae,' a Thracian clan). The shield in the centre shows the Bulgarian lion, Sofia being the capital of Bulgaria. Clockwise from top left, the images represent Saint Sophia, patron saint of the city, the Roman basilica of Santa Sophia, the mineral springs, and the mount of Vitosha (Latin Haemus, Greek Haemos) which overlooks the city.
