In the Middle Ages the whole district was ruled by the Counts of Hallermunt, as vassals for the Bishops of Münster. In the 14<sup>th</sup> century most of the area was acquired by the Welfen dynasty. The arms show the three roses from the arms of the Counts of Hallermunt.
