====Origin/meaning====
===Origin/meaning===
Syke developed around the castle of the Counts of Neubruchhausen in the mid 13th century and became a possession of the Counts of Hoya in 1384. In the 15th century town rights were granted, in 1929 city rights. The oldest seals of the town date from the 17th century and show a bear's claw derived from the arms of the Counts of Hoya. Even though the city belonged to the Counts of Hoya only until 1582, the claw remained in the arms of the town.
