History: Raised in 1688 as Luttrell's Regiment, which become 19th Foot in 1751.
Official blazon
The letter "A", cypher of the late Queen Alexandra, theron the Dannebrog inscribed "1875", surmounted by a crown; below, a scroll inscribed "The Green Howards"
Origin/meaning
The A alludes to Queen Alexandra then Princess of Wales (marrying the future King Edward VII in 1863). She was the daughter of the King of Denmark Christian IX, to which the Dannebrog Cross alludes.
