Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the second seal of the city, dating from the 15th century. The arms show a seven-towered wall with in the front the arms of the Counts of Henneberg, to which the city belonged for many centuries. The oldest seal, dating from 1341, shows a tree between two small hills with the rooster of Henneberg.
