Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on October 18, 1977.
Although granted to the former Timaru City Council, the heraldic emblems used are equally applicable to the whole District and use of the Coat of Arms by the District Council has been approved by the New Zealand Herald of Arms.
The significance of the main features in the Coat of Arms are as follows:
CHEVRON - symbolises the proximity to Mount Cook
FLEECES AND PLOUGH - Denotes the importance of agriculture and pastoral
activities in the District
LYMPHADS (Sailing Ships) - Show the City's dependence upon the sea
SEAHORSES AND WATER and the importance of maritime based
BARRY WAVY (The Sea) commerce
SUN - Indicating the District's sunny climate
KIWI - The flightless native bird used as New Zealand's national emblem and
indicating that Timaru is situated in New Zealand
THE MOTTO - Palma Non Sine Pulvere - is Latin for No Reward Without Effort.
