Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on

The city and castle of Treffurt was conquered between 1333 and 1336 by the joined forces of Mainz, Hessen and Thüringen. The arms were designed afterwards and show the arms of these three states, who jointly ruled the city for many centuries. The wheel is the wheel of the State of Mainz, the swords replaced the earlier use of the lion of Meissen, for Sachsen (as the Wettin dynasty of Sachsen in 1336 were also rulers of Thüringen), and the lower half shows the striped lion of Thüringen and Hessen.
