Origin/meaning The arms were granted on January 15, 1960. The arms show a golden griffin. The arms are derived from the arms of the nobleman Bjarne Erlingsson of Bjarkøy (died 1313) , see also the coat of arms of Bjarkøy). In the 13th and 14th century the Bjarkøy family was one of the most important families in the present troms region. Seal of Bjarne Erlingsson.
