TUXTLA GUTIÉRREZ

State : Chiapas

Arms of Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were designed in 1941 and show a Pre-Colombian figure, like a rabbit on a stone. It was, however, not until 1996 that the current shape and colours were formalised.

Together, the two figures signify the place of an abundance of rabbits (Tochtlan in Náhuatl), a name that the Mexicas gave to the valley surrounding the Zoque settlement which was characterized for its abundance of rabbits.
