A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall consisting of a target divided crenellated horizontally red and silver at top and reversed silver and blue at bottom and encircled in base by a stylized green wreath inscribed "ALL BUT WAR IS SIMULATION" in silver, overall a vertical silver flash surmounted by a green demi-soldier, the bottom crenellated.
Origin/meaning
The mission of training, simulation, and research in service to the individual soldier is denoted by the demi-figure appearing at the battlements, a symbol of defense. The lightning flash is associated with STRICOM and signifies speedy response to defense needs. Simulated situations, as distinguished from actual simulations, are represented by the blue rings; the red rings represent actual situations. With silver (white) they also stand for the United States. The disc recalls a target, referring to the military hardware which is used in selected programs. Distinguished service is signified by the stylized wreath bearing the motto. Green stands for growth and development.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 25 August 1994.
