Official blazon

  • (nl) Van blaauw, beladen met het beeld van St. Pieter van goud.
  • (no official French blazon from 1819) D'azur au St. Pierre d'or.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on July 28, 1819.

The arms show the image of St. Peter, the patron saint of the town. The saint already appeared on the historical seals of the local council. On the seals, however, the saint was sitting on a throne. In 1913 the mayor tried to have the arms re-granted in the proper way, but only a new seal was granted (see below), the arms remained the same.

The colours are the Dutch national colours, as in 1813 the mayor applied without indicating the colours. The arms were thus granted in the national colours. When the arms were confirmed after the Belgian independence, the colours were not changed.
