Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 6, 1995.

The arms show two Templar crosses, as the region historically was owned by the Knights Templar. The grapes in the base symbolise the importance of viticulture for the area. The windmill blades symbolise the many windmills in the municipality as well as the cultivation of wheat.

The eight-pointed star between crescents is taken from the arms of the Carvalhos family. Sebastião José de Carvalho, Viscount of Chanceleiros, lived and died in the village. He is famous for his work to improve grape varieties that are resistant against Philoxera. The grapes thus also symbolise his work.
