The first quarter refers to the two main Abbeys of Klingenmünster (cross) and [[Abbey of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul in Wissembourg|Weissenburg]] (key), to which part of the area belonged for centuries. The colours are those of the Counts of Zweibrücken, which, until around 1600 ruled most of the territory. They often resided in  the castle in Bad Bergzabern, which is shown in the second quarter. The third shows the lion of the Pfalz, the Counts of Zweibrücken were succeeded by the Counts of the Pfalz.

The fourth quarter refers to the German Wine-road (Weinstrasse), which runs through the area. The grapes and grape knife symbolise the importance of viticulture.

'''Origin/meaning :'''
The bordure is a typical symbol for a Verbandsgemeinde.
