The arms were granted on January 6, 1898 and again on February 12, 1980.

The oldest arms of the city showed only a branch of an oak tree. These were used until 1695 when the city council decided that the arms should be divided with in the upper half the arms of the County Franchimont, and in the lower the oak tree. These arms were used until the 19<sup>th</sup> century and officially granted in 1898.
