The arms were granted in 1530 by King Ferdinand and are based on the oldest seal of the city. This seal, probably dating from 1218 already shows the divided shield and the eagle. The latter is most likely derived from the arms of the Zähringen family, who ruled the city at the time. The original eagle was facing left, but since 1251 the eagle is facing right, which has not changed since.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1530 by King Ferdinand and are based on the oldest seal of the city. This seal, probably dating from 1218 already shows the divided shield and the eagle. The latter is most likely derived from the arms of the Zähringen family, who ruled the city at the time. The original eagle was facing left, but since 1251 the eagle is facing right, which has not changed since.

During the rule of the Counts of Fürstenberg the eagle was shown in a bordure of clouds, derived from the arms of Fürstenberg.

The original arms were granted with a crest of peacock feathers, but these were rarely used in the 20th century, image see below.
