(1818) Van goud beladen met eene sirene houdende in har linker hand een knol in deszelfs natuurlijke kleur.
(1840) Een gulden schild met eene meermin, houdende by de linker hand eene gebladerde raep, het een en het ander naer het leven.
(1993) In goud een zeemeermin houdende in de linkerhand een gebladerde raap, het geheel van natuurlijke kleur.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 13, 1818 and confirmed on July 9, 1840 and again on March 1, 1993.

The origin of the siren (mermaid) holding a beet is not known. It may be a symbol for the sea, but this is not certain. The siren first appears on the seal of the local council in the 18^th century. The beet is the beet of the Waasland region. For the history of the beet, see Sint-Niklaas.
