Origin/meaning

Both arms were officially granted on October 7, 1845 by King Ludwig I of Bayern.

The left (or small) arms, with the lion of the Pfalz holding a letter W, is based on the small seal of the city, and has been used as the arms of the city since 1748. The right arms are based show the arms of the Counts of the Pfalz from the Wittelsbach dynasty, who were also Dukes and later Kings of Bayern. These arms already appear on the first great seal of the city, which dates from 1341 when Emperor Ludwig the Bayer granted the city rights. The letter W appears for the first time in 1739 and is likely added to distinguish the arms from other arms with the Pfalz-Bayern combination.
