Origin/meaning

The bishop used in Echstätt his personal arms impaled with the diocesan arms. In Augsburg he quartered personal symbols with the diocesan arms.

The letters IHS (Jesus Hominis Salvator) and the colour blue is seen as a colour for faith. The escallop is the symbol for St. James (Jakob) and refers to the parish of St. James in Schrobenhausen where he was a priest.

The cross is the symbol for a bishop in Eichstätt and of St. Ulrich, the patron saint of the diocese of Augsburg.
