Origin/meaning

The arms show the symbol of St. John Baptist, the patron saint of the city and the fesses of the arms of the counts of Isenburg-Büdingen. The first seal of the city dates from the 16th century and shows the patron saint holding a snake in one hand and the arms of the counts of Isenburg-Büdingen in the other hand. The counts were in possession of the city and surrounding area. The origin of the snake is not clear.

In some later seals St. John was replaced by a savage and the additional arms were removed. In the present arms the saint has been replaced by his symbol and the arms of the counts were placed in the footer.
