WERNER THISSEN

Born : December 3, 1938
Deceased :

Auxiliary Bishop of Münster, 1999-2002; Titular Bishop of Scampa
Archbishop of Hamburg, 2002-2014

Auxiliary Bishop of Münster

Archbishop of Hamburg

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

When as auxiliary bishop he used the Tau-cross and stars taken from the logo of the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck school which he attended. The lower half shows the arms of the city of Kleve, where he was born.

The arms as Archbishop show the arms of the Archdiocese in I and IV and the changed arms of the Archbishop in II and III.

In the personal arms the axe is the symbol of St. Matthew, from which the family name Thissen is derived. The swan is another symbol of the city of Kleve and the Tau cross remained.
