The village of Wetten is first mentioned as a possession of Geldern in 1300. The oldest seal dates from 1325 and shows the medlar (Mispel) of Geldern. All later seals show the same flower. When the two claws were added I don't know.
In the 17th century, due to the increase of the pelgrimage to Kevelaer the village was named Wetten-Kevelaer, but in the middle of the 17th century the two villages were split.
