Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on Februari 26, 1845 and again on March 12, 1996.

The arms are those of the Roelants family, as used in the late 18^th century. The family acquired the estate of Wijnegem in the late 18^th century and added at the time the canting grapes (wijn=wine) to their ancestral arms (a golden cross in black). In the mid 19^th century the municipality applied for the use of the arms as municipal arms.
