WILLIAM AUGUSTINE HICKEY

Born : May 13, 1869
Deceased : October 4, 1933

Bishop of Providence, 1921-1933

Arms (crest) of William Augustine Hickey

Official blazon

Impaled. Dexter: Azure, three crosses moline argent; Sinister: Gyronny of eight sable and or, on the first four acorns and on the last as many oak leaves counterchanged.

MOTTO: Dominus regit me.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms are an assumption without difference of the arms of the Irish gentle family of Hickey who bore: Gyronny of eight sable and or, on the first four acorns and on the last as many oak leaves, counterchanged.

The motto means "The Lord directs me" (Psalm 22: 1).
