Origin/meaning

The towns of Zell and Sparneck historically had the same council, and thus also used the same seals. In the 19th century the council of Zell started to use separate arms, which were granted in 1819.

The arms show in the first and fourth quarter the quartered arms of the Hohenzollern family, as Counts of Ansbach (and Nürnberg), but in the blue colours of Bayern. The colours of the Hohenzollern arms historically are silver and black. The second and third showed a heart, see image below. The meaning of the hearts, which in the new arms were changed into leaves, is not known. During the 20th century the colours and leaves were changed.
