The badge is based on the arms of Egbert Meeuwsz Kortenaer (1605-1665), Admiral of the Maas Admirality. He served in the Navy from 1626 to 1665, killed in Action at the Battle of Lowestoft on 13 June 1665. The badge was approved on 10 April 1952.
