ZULIA STATE

Escudo de Zulia State

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1917.The ship symbolises the navigation on the lagoon. The castle is the Castillo de San Carlos y Zapara near Maracaibo.

The upper left part (deep red with white lightnings) symbolizes the so called "relampago de catatumbo", which is quite a unique natural feature of the region. It means the natural lightnings, which occur every night over the vast swamp-area south of Lago Maracaibo, and which can be observed even from the city of Maracaibo at a clear view. The official flag of the State of Zulia also shows this symbol.
