Official blazon

Azure, a fess or between in chief a male griffin passant argent, mailed or holding in the dexter forepaw a cross paty fitchee or and in base three estoiles or, two and one.

Origin/meaning

The lion is taken from the arms of a Kavanagh family and symbolises here the last name of Father John Kavanagh, the first priest appointed in Gippsland in 1850. The bar and the stars are taken from the arms of Governor Gipps, after whom the area was named.
