Origin/meaning
The blue and silver shield is an allusion to the Virgin Mary and has a double meaning, bth spiritual and as patron saint of the diocese.
The sugarcane represents Saint Joseph, saint namesake of the Prelate and Patron of the Church, and an example of the virtues necessary for those who are called to serve the mystery of the manifestation of the Word of God to the peoples. The three stars represent the virginity of Our Lady, model of who is called to consecrate himself for the love of God and for the salvation of the world; both elements represent the first years of the pastoral service of the Prelate in the Minor Seminars of Saint Joseph de Caparide and Our Lady of Grace of Penafirme.
The olive branch represents the years of pastoral service in the Major Seminary of Christ the King of Olives; the olives represent the oil of the anointing of the Holy Spirit with which the ministers are ordained for mission; the number seven evokes the Seven Archpriests of the Diocese of Guarda, immediate horizon of the new pastoral service of the Prelate in the episcopal ministry.
The motto "the Lord is good The Lord is near" is taken, in the first sentence, from Psalm 99.
