Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the Bishop are based upon his devotion to Our Lady of Providence and St. Joseph, his Patron Saint. Our Lady is represented by her flower, the lily; St. Joseph, by the carpenter's triangle. The cross symbolizes the Faith, the anchor of Hope echoes the Bishop's motto.

The motto means "Mary, Mother of Hope."
