Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 17, 1935.

The arms show the bar taken from the arms of the Counts of the Mark, who ruled the area in the medieval times. The three birds are taken from the arms of the Knights of Hattingen, who had their estate in the village since around 1200. Their arms showed a bar with two green birds above and one below, according to a manuscript from 1619.

To the Amt Hattingen belonged :

  • Altendorf-Ruhr
  • Bredenscheid-Stüter
  • Niederelfringhausen
  • Oberelfringhausen
