===Origin/meaning===
Schöningen received city rights around 1320 and the oldest seal dates from the same time. The seal showed a lion with an eight-pointed star, but not in a shield. The second seal, dating from the early 15th century already shows the above composition. The colours are known already since 1492. The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, and is taken from the arms of the Dukes of Braunschweig. The origin of the star is not clear.
