The main symbol in the arms is a kind of staff locally known as the 'Mörserkeule', which symbolises the fact that the municipality used to be a place of a court. It is taken from the arms of the seal of the former Landscape (Landschaft) Stapelhorn. It is also the main symbol in the arms of [[Amt Stapelholm]]. See also the arms of [[Norderstapel]]. The three wavy bars represent the three rivers Eider, Treene and Sorge. The colours are the colours of Schleswig.
