Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 12, 1917 and were confirmed on October 5, 1972 as none of the previous municipalities used its own arms.

Beverungen received city rights in 1417 from the Archbishop of Köln (representing the Bishop pf Paderborn) and Abbot Dietrich of the Corvey Abbey. The oldest seal dates from the same time and shows a city gate and St. Vitus, the patron saint of Corvey.

The first time the fleur-de-lis appears is in the 17th century. At first only one fleur-de-lis was used, in the 18th century the present arms were used. The symbol at such is probably derived from the symbol of the Bishops of Paderborn, who ruled the city together with the Abbey.
