The oldest seal of the city dates from around 1300 and shows in the upper half the lion of the Pfalz, and in the lower half a kind of fence with points, most likely red in silver. The fence also appeared alone on a small seal form the 15<sup>th</sup> century. Later the fence was replaced by the diamonds of Bayern and the boot was added. The boot has been explained as the symbol of the medieval Count Eckhart, but the origin is not really known.
