Origin/meaning
The oldest seal of the city dates from around 1300 and already shows a tree. The tree, since 1555 described as a beech tree, is a canting symbol (Wald=forest). All later seals and images show the tree, sometimes on a hill or mountain, or as above. The above image has been in use since the late 19th century.
