Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 11, 1946.
The upper part shows the lion of the Dukes of Schleswig, as the area belonged to this duchy. The lower part shows the five former territories that form the present district. These territories (Harder) were originally areas from which groups of farmers were recruited for the army. Later they became administrative units.
