Origin/meaning

I have no idea whether the borough actually used arms. A thriving town in medieval times, it was virtually non-existent in the mid 1800s and the area was incorporated into the Isle of Wight Sanitary District in 1886.

The arms above shows the early 14th century seal of the borough (from Ewe, 1972).
