German heraldry:

Selected collector's items from Germany:

BRILON (BRI)

State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
Incorporated into 1975 Hochsauerlandkreis

Wappen von Brilon (kreis)/Arms (crest) of Brilon (kreis)
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 18, 1951.

The arms show in the upper part the cross of the State of Köln and the star of Waldeck. The area belonged until the 14th century to the Counts of Waldeck. In the early 14th century the bishops of Köln gradually took over the area, and made it part of the Duchy of Engern. This Duchy used the arms of the Counts of Tecklenburg, as it originally was a possession of Tecklenburg. The arms of Engern (=Tecklenburg) are thus shown in the lower part of the arms of the district.
