The arms were granted in August 1937.

The arms show in the upper two quarters the arms of the Princes of Anhalt. The third quarter shows the arms of the county Waldersee, to which Dessau belonged. The fourth quarter shows the arms of Eikes von Repgow, the writer of the Sachsenspiegel, who was born in Reppichau in Köthen. The escutcheon is the arms of the State of Anhalt.

Already in 1934 arms were granted to the county. It shows the arms of the Princes of Anhalt, with the arms of Eikes von Repgow as an escutcheon.
