Origin/meaning

The arms quarter the arms of the diocese with an image of St. Gotthard, the patron saint of the bishop. St. Gotthard was first abbot in Bavaria and then bishop of Hildesheim at the beginning of the eleventh century. A forerunner of European culture who founded a school of music and painting, which in the short years of his episcopate built 30 churches and that is why the iconography represents the Saint with a model of a church.
