Bishop of Würzburg

Origin/meaning

As auxiliary bishop he used the black cross of the Archdiocese of Köln with in two quarters a part of a sun. This symbol was derived from one of the most famous relics in the cathedral of Köln and indicated his allegiance to the cathedral.

In Würzburg the cross was made smaller to indicate more a Christian symbol as the Archdiocese, and in the first and fourth quarter (part) of the arms of the Diocese of Würzburg were added.
